Equipment review: Canon 24-105mm f4 IS L
Before reading this review please read my general introduction to reviews here
This lens came as a 'bonus' when I bought my EOS 5D MkII because I could only find the lens kit at the time. I had considered buying the lens before but had been reluctant due to the often negative web chatter that surrounds it. However, now that I have one I am definitely a fan.
My reference is the 28-70mm f2.8L, which has now served me well for many years. Though it produces superb images it often is the case that 28mm isn't quite wide enough and 70mm isn't quite long enough. The 24-105mm range is fantastic for a walk-around lens on a full-frame camera. Losing the stop from f2.8 to f4 hasn't been much of a penalty as I've simply moved my standards ISO from 200 to 400 while using it, and there is almost no quality penalty for that on either of the 5Ds. I've yet to really need the IS, but I do notice the lighter weight of the lens. That said, walking around with this on a 5D is hardy less obtrusive than with the 28-70mm.
